His visit to our parish is one stop on a two-week Pastoral Visit of the Midwest which the Cardinal is making to various local Luxembourg communities in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. While St. Michael’s is considered a German parish in its origins, a significant portion of its founding and early membership were Luxembourg immigrants who spoke the Germanic dialect of Luxembourgish. St. Michael’s was the spiritual home of the “city Luxembourgers” while St. Henry’s Church on Ridge and Devon was the spiritual home of the “country Luxembourgers.” The first Luxembourgish ethnic society, the Luxembourg Independent Club was founded here at St. Michael’s in the early 1880s. Also a few of the early Redemptorists who served St. Michael’s were of Luxembourgish descent. All are welcome and invited to attend the Mass with the Cardinal of Luxembourg here at St. Michael’s Church on Monday, August 1, at 8:00 AM. His pastoral visit is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Luxembourg, the Honorary Consulate of Luxembourg in Wisconsin, the Luxembourg American Cultural Society and the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America which is based in Chicago.
