Children's Religious Education

Thank you to all returning children and families and welcome, welcome to all who will be new to us this year. With a great sense of anticipation, we look forward to our new sessions in the fall.

The Religious Education Office at St. Michael in Old Town remains dedicated to promoting the lifelong faith formation of its parish community. We seek to do so by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in which our students and their families will develop a hunger and increasing desire to learn more about Jesus and the Church that He founded; remembering at all times that you, the parents and guardians of our students, are their first and best teachers and that all that we do is in support of your great mission. We remember also, that the Holy Scarifice of the Mass is the source and summit of our faith and we will work to foster a spirit of worship among our families.

Sacrament Preparation

We are delighted to help families with children of all ages prepare to receive their Sacraments. Traditionally, First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are received in the 2nd grade; and Confirmation is received in the 8th grade. Knowing that life has many circumstances which necessitate flexibility, we will now offer a Rit of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) program for all youth who are in grades 3 -7 who wish to enroll in R.E. classes, but are in need of sacramental preparation as well. RCIC classes are in addition to the regular R.E. classes; are family-fmoratted, and scheduled individually. Please contact Elizabeth Kabacinski via email at for additional information and to schedule a conference to discuss your family's needs.

Please note that by Archdiocesan policy, we are to ensure that all children receiving the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion do so as part of a two-year process of learning and preparation.  The same is true for Confirmation.  Our program is a spiral curriculum which grows with the children each year; we anticipate that a child enrolled in our R.E. program will be a lifelong learner in the Faith.

Eucharist Preparation

Eucharist Preparation begins in 1st grade or Level 1. If your child has completed grade one in school, but has not yet received any formal religious education, they will be enrolled in Level One class in the Fall. Eucharist is a two-year preparation and includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation as well. This is an Archdiocesan policy guideline.

Office for Religious Education

Religious Education classes for Grades 1 – 8 will be held on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 10:55 a.m.

Our Pre-K and K program will have monthly meetings on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 10:15 – 10:45 a.m.

The High School Youth Group meetings are still “under construction” but we would like to have Sunday evening meetings, including the evening Mass.  More information to follow soon!

CLOW Children’s Liturgy of the Word.  This is a volunteer-dependent program at which children from age 4 through those in Grade 2 who have not yet received their First Holy Communion are invited to the chapel for the Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. Mass each week.  Please refer to the Family Participation Form and sign-up in teams or to be added to a team.  If we have 8 teams of 3 adults, your volunteer time would be only once every 8 weeks.  Please help us with this important ministry. TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED!!

Summer Office Hours – R.E. Office    The R.E. Office will not be open on Sundays from June through August.  Please contact our coordinator, Elizabeth Kabacinski, via email at or leave a voice message at 312-642-2498 x303 to schedule an appointment during the week.
